University of Calabar
The Authority of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has suspended the ongoing Students Union Week celebrations at the institution.
The suspension of the celebration was informed by the death of a student who fell off a moving vehicle and died during the jeans carnival organised as part of the activities for the Students Union Week.
Sources said the student whose identity is yet to be ascertained was rushed to the hospital but died from severe injuries.
Following the incident, the Registrar of the university, Dr. Sydney Enyindah, in a memo, announced the suspension of other activities marking the student’s week.
The memo read, “Following the unfortunate andsad incident which occurred duringthe “Jeans Carnival” on Tuesday 5thSeptember 2023, resulting in the deathof a student, the Management of theUniversity has directed the immediatesuspension of the remaining activitiesof the Student Union Week.” (Daily Independent)
