DG, World Trade Organisation, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has given an advice on measures that should be taken to attract Nigerians in the Diaspora to contribute towards Nigeria’s development and growth.
Okonjo-Iweala, gave the advice yesterday, to the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), during a presentation to her as a “Diaspora Icon,” a decision that was taken at the recently held Maiden National Diaspora Merit Award in Abuja.
The team that made the presentation to her was led by the Chairman/CEO, NIDCOM, Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa.
The WTO DG said Nigerians in the Diaspora was capable of doing so much for the country, which goes beyond remittances. She listed skills and knowledge transfer as other areas the country could benefit, especially as most countries of the world were fast embracing technology and digital tools.
On her recent recognition, Okonjo-Iweala expressedpride as a citizen of Nigeria, adding that she was elated, and humbled, for being selected to receive such an award as a “Diaspora Icon.”
She commended the Commission for the work it has been doing over the years in terms of Diaspora engagement, under the pragmatic leadership of the NiDCOM boss.
Okonjo-Iweala expressed readiness to work with the Commission and the Federal Government of Nigeria for the betterment of all Nigerians.
While presenting the award to her, the NiDCOM Chairman stated that the award was presented to the DG, WTO for her selfless service to Nigeria and humanity at large.
Dabiri-Erewa remarked that the former minister serves as an inspiration to all Nigerian women, aiming at balancing family ties and career growth.
The Diaspora Icon Award was one of the categories of awards at the National Diaspora Day celebrations and National Diaspora Merit Award held in July 26, 2023. (THISDAY)
