Kenya’s star athlete Abraham Kipton has won the 2016 Lagos Marathon. He just breasted the tape at the Eko Atlantic City, clocking a time of 2 hours 16 minutes and 9 seconds to take home the first prize of $50,000.
Hosea Kipkemba, also of Kenya, finished second with a time of 2 hours 16 minutes and 34 seconds while Debebe Tolsa of Ethiopia came third in 2 hours 26 minutes and 40 seconds.
Ojeleye Sefiu emerged as the first Nigerian to finish the 42-kilometre race. She competed in the special category, in which she came third.
Thousands of enthusiastic runners started the race from the National Stadium in Surulere at 7:10 a.m., with the elite athletes, who arrived for the race on Thursday evening, soon breaking away from the pack.
Over 20,000 runners registered to participate in the marathon, which was last held over 30 years ago. They include Kenyan star Josphat Kiptanui Too Chobei, winner of the 2015 New Taipei City Wanjinshi International Marathon, whose boast to win the Lagos race failed to materialise.
