The Acting National Chairman of APC, Sen Abubakar Kyari
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will today decide the fate of National Working Committee (NWC) members.
The meeting will be held at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja.
The party’s National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, and the National Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore, had resigned.
Acting National Chairman, Senator Abubakar Kyari, is a ministerial nominee.
Some NWC members might also be replaced after today’s crucial meeting.
A national caucus meeting of the party was held last night in Abuja where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu spoke on the essence of financial transparency and the need to involve more youths and women in the affairs of the ruling party.
Last night, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo apologised for his inability to attend the caucus meeting because he was away on an overseas trip.
Also, The Nation learnt that former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Gabduje might become the party’s National Chairman, while a former spokesperson for the Ninth Senate, Senator Ajibola Basiru, is expected to be announced as the National Secretary.
Their confirmation is expected to be among the major issues at today’s NEC meeting.
Adamu and Omisore voluntarily resigned from the NWC on July 16.
Ganduje and Basiru are expected to be formally unveiled to the NEC today, being the only organ of the party recognised by the constitution to approve such appointments on behalf of the National Convention of the party.
Though the agenda of today’s NEC meeting is still been kept under wrap, our correspondent gathered that the meeting is also expected to look into the financial records of the party since April 2022 and approve the membership of the five statutory committees proposed by the NWC.
The Nation also gathered that the party’s highest policy-making organ will be discussing the fate of the NWC members following the number of vacancies in the administrative organ of the party.
A highly placed member of the National Caucus who spoke in confidence with The Nation last night in Abuja said the fate of the NWC will equally take centre stage during the NEC meeting today.
“Currently we have five vacancies in the NWC. Two other members have been nominated for a ministerial appointment and will soon be resigning from the committee, a development that requires the attention of the NEC.
“Many party chieftains and members of the National Caucus are concerned about the NWC as currently composed. We shall table their matter at tomorrow’s (today) NEC meeting.” (The Nation)
