Breaking News: Upper Iweka, the most prominent road in Anambra State, renamed Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu Way

About six months after his burial, big honour has come the way of late Ezeigbo Gburugburu, Dim Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, from his home state, Anambra.

The most prominent road in the state, leading from Niger Bridge to Upper Iweka, has been renamed after the one-time Head of State of the defunct Republic of Biafra. The famous road will thus be known henceforth as Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu Way.

Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, announced this yesterday in Nnewi at a ceremony marking the official end of Ojukwu’s mourning period.

Uche Ezechukwu, a senior media practitioner who attended the ceremony, described it as “rousing” in a Facebook update. Apart from breaking the news of the renaming of Niger Bridge – Upper Iweka Road as Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu Way, Ezechukwu said that “Obi also called on Nigerians, especially Ndigbo, to commence programs to immortalised our hero.”

Transport & Business Express reports that Dim Ojukwu died on November 26, 2011 in a London hospital aged 78. He was given an unprecedented hero’s burial last March 3 in his Nnewi country home.
