The Director-General of National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Prof. Abubakar O Sulaiman, has been honoured with the Impact and Innovation award by the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD), the United Kingdom public body dedicated to strengthening democracy around the world.

Notice of the prestigious recognition was contained in a letter signed by the WFD Regional Director, Africa, Michael Nevin. It acknowledges Sulaiman’s exceptional development-driven initiatives at the NILDS.

Reacting to the award, the Deputy Director, Information and Communication to the NILDS Director-General, Joke Akinsami, said ‘It is truly an honour to receive such commendation and be acknowledged for the remarkable efforts and dedication demonstrated by the DG, management, and staff of the Institute.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Deputy Director, information and communication to the Director General, Joke Akinsami, on Saturday.

The statement read in part: “Prof. Sulaiman embarked on this journey with a clear vision of creating meaningful change in our country and it is truly incredible to witness these efforts being recognized on a global scale. The recognition from the esteemed WFD, our partner for the past three years, serves as a testament to the power of passionate individuals uniting to drive sustainable development.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the WFD for bestowing this honor upon us. Their acknowledgement reaffirms our belief in the importance of supporting democratic processes and institutions in Nigeria and worldwide, while concurrently strengthening democracy, promoting good governance, and facilitating democratic reforms.

"I would also like to express my deepest appreciation to everyone who has been part of this journey– the leadership of the National Assembly, NILDS' management and staff. Your support and collective effort have played vital roles in our success.”

“This commendation from the WFD ignites my determination to continue pushing boundaries and making a lasting impact. I am more motivated than ever to collaborate, innovate and advance legislative and democratic institutions in Nigeria and the ECOWAS sub-region,” the statement further Sulaiman as saying.
