Combination picture of Nigerian passport and Seychelles flag
A flurry of reactions has greeted the alleged banning of Nigerian passport holders from visitingSeychellesfor holiday purposes.
A Twitter user and travel content creator had shared a screenshot of what appeared to be a Seychelles’ visaapplication rejection email.
The screenshot reads: “We regret to inform you that your application has been denied, as per immigration regulation, for now, we are not accepting any NIGERIAN passport holders for holiday purposes. Kindly contacthttp://www.ics.gov.sc/(Seychelles Immigration) or call 248 4 293 636 for more information.”
Although the Federal Government is yet to react as of the time of filing this report, the ban placement has elicited mixed reactions.
Checks last December, Nigeria and Seychelles signed a pact that would enable direct flights between the two countries.
Before the ban, Nigeria had a long-standing visa-free agreement with Seychelles which allows Nigerian citizens free entry without a visa for 30 days.
Reacting, a media personality Wemimo Adewuni said: Nigeria needs a holistic overturn of its foreign policy! Our Afrocentric “big brother Africa” approach is getting us embarrassed! We need to switch to reciprocity.
“Imagine Seychelles banning Nigerians from getting visitors visa! We’re taking our money there yet they embarrass us!
Popular actress Kate Amaka Henshaw said: “E fit be say some of our people don go dere go cast themselves!!! Seychelles wey others they go jejely, e reach us, ban enter. My tayad is tayad.”
Lawyer Modupe Odele @Mochievous tweeted: “Nigerians do not actually know what it means to be treated decently. When I said Seychelles banning an entire nation was discrimination there were people in my mentions saying “maybe we deserve it. There’s nothing that justifies banning an entire country.’’(The Nation)
