Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara has called on indigenes of the state in Diaspora to emulate the exemplary values of the United States House of Representatives member representing Washington District of Columbia, Dr. Ibrahim Owolewa.
AbdulRazaq gave the task in Ilorin on Friday while receiving Owolewa in Ilorin.
This is contained in a statement issued in Ilorin on Friday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Modupe Joel.
Represented by his deputy, Mr. Kayode Alabi, the governor described Owolewa as a shining light who has made Kwara proud as a youth and through his good conduct in the US House of Representatives.
While highlighting the need for more Nigerians to participate in politics in and out of the shores of Nigeria, AbdulRazaq noted that it was important to show the world the good qualities that the Nigerians possessed, rather than telling tales of woes.
He challenged Kwarans, especially those in Diaspora, to emulate Owolewa by coaching and guiding more indigenes to leadership positions anywhere around the world, saying the world needs to see the rich cultural heritage of Nigeria.
The governor also urged Owolewa to do more for the state and Nigeria by collaborating with the state government on employment and empowerment for the youths and bringing investors to the state.
Earlier, the Nigerian US-based lawmaker recounted that what he learnt from his father as a child and an indigene of Omu-Aran in Kwara shaped his life.
Owolewa said he was the first Nigerian to be elected into the US state congress, which experience developed into a passion to groom and coach more Nigerians who are currently occupying strong political positions in the USA.
The Deputy Speaker of Kwara House of Assembly, Mr Ojo Olayiwola, applauded the US congressman for his huge level of impact, adding that the state is happy that he is still connected to his roots. (NAN)
