President Tinubu
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu broke the law by unilaterally suspending Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele.
This is according to seasoned lawyer, Chief Goddy Uwazurike, who raised six posers in his reaction made available to News Express on Saturday afternoon. He described Tinubu’s Friday intervention in the running of the apex bank as “The CBN Abracadabra!!!!”
“BAT ignored the Board of the CBN in the suspension and did not justify his actions by referring to the CBN Act,” the veteran Lagos lawyer said.
Below are the posers he raised:
1. The appointment of the CBN Gov is a statutory one. He can only be removed by the Senate resolution. Remember the Sanusi vs FGN case at the FHC.
2. The motion ex parte by the DSS to arrest and detain Emefiele was rejected by the FHC.
3. The reverberation in the international financial will be expected.
4. BAT ignored the Board of the CBN in the suspension and did not justify his actions by referring to the CBN Act.
5. The person who is the acting Gov ought to have retired having crossed the age of 60.
6. Did Emefiele behave wisely in remaining in office after PMB left office?
Certainly not! The great Zik said, “it’s only a tree that stays put even as it’s being cut down”.
News Express reports that Emefiele became the first victim of President Tinubu, who exactly on his 12th day in office, suspended him “with immediate effect”.
News soon broke that Emefiele had become a guest of the DSS.
Announcing Emefiele’s suspension on Friday evening, June 9, 2023, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, said the CBN Governor was undergoing investigation. He also cited the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy as another reason for Emefiele’s suspension.
A statement signed on behalf of the SGF by the Director, Information, Willie Bassey, reads: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended the Central Bank Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, CFR, from office with immediate effect.
“This is sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.
“Mr Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of investigation and the reforms.”
Emefiele was subsequently arrested in Lagos by operatives of the Department of State Service (DSS) and flown to Abuja, where he is said to be undergoing interrogation.
