Imo scores a first a first as House of Assembly names library after Chinua Achebe

Imo State in Nigeria’s South-East has become the first to move to immortalise legendary writer, Prof. Chinua Achebe, who died March 21 and was buried last Thursday, May 23.

Hot on the heels of Achebe’s burial in his hometown Ogidi in neighbouring Anambra State theImo State House of Assembly unanimously voted to name its libraryafter the lateliterary icon.The decision was announced by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chief Benjamin Chukwuemeka Uwajumogu, soon after the House observed a minute silence in honour of the man it described as the Ogbuefi of African literature.
The motion had come up under matter of urgent importance, moved by the member for Ezinihitte Mbaise State Constituency, Hon. Dr. Obioma Ekennia. It was unanimously adopted when the Speaker put it to vote.
