Bye Election: PDP cedes assembly ticket to late member's relation

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau State has given its ticket for upcoming House of Assembly bye-election for Qua'pan North seat to Mr Alloy Daboer.

The election, which has been fixed for November 29 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is to replace Geoffrey Dashe, the member representing the constituency but died in August.

Publicity Secretary of PDP in the state, Peter Shyepsuk, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos that Daboer emerged through consensus.

He said that five people indicated interest in the race but that the number was later reduced to two, from whom the candidate was chosen without going through real primary.

According to him, one of the last two aspirants conceded to Deboer after some deep consideration.

Shyepsuk said that Daboer was ‘very capable’ of replacing the late Deputy Chief Whip, adding that all stakeholders were behind him.

“We won the seat on April 11, and we shall win it again on November 29.”

He explained that the choice of Daboer was not just because he was a relation of the late member, but because he possessed requisite qualities that would make the party to win the election.

“The party had earlier prepared to conduct primaries, but after due consultations with elders and stakeholders from the constituency, Daboer emerged through consensus.

“We actually wanted the primaries, but the PDP Constitution allows for a candidate to emerge via consensus, and so, what we did was legal and in line with our vision.

“We are not fielding Daboer because he is a relation of the deceased member, but we have been following his antecedents.

“Indeed, we are convinced that he has won the trust and confidence of his people.”

He, however, said that the party would not relent but would put in everything to win the poll.

“We are not resting; we are not sleeping; we are not taking anything for granted. We do not want to lose that seat because it is very dear to us.” (NAN)
