Two Majors and 32 Brigadier Generals who retired in 2019 were on Friday honoured with the ceremonial pulling-out ceremony by the Nigerian Army Medical Corps (NAMC).

The glamorous event which was held at the Bonny Cantonment, Victoria Island Lagos, was in recognition of their meritorious and unblemished over three decades of service to the country.

Speaking at the ceremony, the former Corps Commander, Medical, Maj.-Gen. Ikechuckwu Okeke (rtd) said it showed the army and the NAMC still value the age-long military tradition that appreciates team contribution.

He expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Faruk Yahaya, for the valedictory parade, adding that it was a day of mixed feelings.

“Today’s event is therefore our valedictory parade and a day of mixed feelings of joy, nostalgia, a little sadness and deep thoughts. We thank God and we are happy for the privilege to retire from service in good physical and mental health.

“It is most honourable to retire voluntarily rather than compulsory retirement or other ways. It is noteworthy that all the generals being pulled out today retired voluntarily and with unblemished records.

“On a sad note, not all of us that started the job had the privilege of ending well or rising to the rank of general. Many have paid the supreme prize by giving their lives in the course.

May God comfort their families and grant them eternal rest,” he said.

According to Okeke, the NAMC was one of the very specialised and cherished corps in the army, adding that dedication to duty and hard work made his time as Corps Commander successful. (The Nation)
