Family of Okechukwu Eleonu, allegedly shot dead by a former commander of a disbanded Vigilante group in Rivers State, has called for justice.

The Guardian learnt that Eleonu, a former chairman of Mgbuola community, Ndele in Emohua Local Council of Rivers State, was killed on Saturday, October 15, for exposing bunkering activities in the community.

The deceased’s younger brother, Victor Eleonu, said: “Eyewitness told me that he reported illegal oil bunkering going on in the community to the Police. The disbanded vigilante group commander, allegedly being a leader of the illegal oil bunkering business, caught him and shot him.

“The matter has been reported to Rumuji Police station but no arrest has been made.”

Also, the wife of the deceased, Mary Eleonu, has called on the police to arrest the alleged culprit.

The mother of three, said: “ The commander of the former vigilante group in the community shot my husband dead last Saturday.

“Before I got to where they shot him, he had died. He is in the mortuary now as we speak. I have three children, two boys and a girl. I want government to arrest the killer of my husband.

“He boasted that nobody could arrest him. He said nobody could do anything for him. I am now a widow.” ”

My daughter wants to write the West African Examination Council (WAEC), and I do not have money. It is my husband that has been catering for me. He alleged that my husband has removed him from the defunct vigilante group and wants to close where he (former commander) is doing bunkering, that is why he shot him.”

Contacted, spokesperson for Rivers State Police Command, Superintendent of Police (SP), Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident, noting that Investigation is ongoing. (The Guardian: Excluding Headline)
