Shehu Sani and Chinua Achebe
Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has disclosed what the award-winning Nigerian novelist, Chinua Achebe told him after he asked him about (Achebe) his reason for rejecting the Nigerian National Honours award.
The former lawmaker disclosed this on Wednesday via his official Twitter page, expressing that the famous poet and critics told him to read the content of the letter of my rejection as it was written in English not Mandarin
Sani wrote, “I once asked Chinua Achebe why he rejected the Nigerian National Honours awards. He said my Son, read the content of the letter of my rejection. It’s written in English, not Mandarin or Greek.”
It will be recalled that Achebe rejected the National Honours award twice, first in 2003 and the second time in 2011.
According to the novelist, he rejected the offer of becoming a Commander of the Federal Republic because the issue of corruption in the nation wasn’t addressed.
He said in 2011 after the second rejection, “the reasons for rejecting the offer when it was first made have not been addressed let alone solved. It is inappropriate to offer it again to me.” (Daily Independent)
