The Police in Delta State have arrested three nurses in Asaba, for allegedly removing the eyes, nose and eye of a dead baby. The Guardian learnt that the incident occurred on Sunday at a private hospital (name withheld) in Asaba, the state capital.

According to sources, the hospital had ‘discharged’ the deceased (newborn) on Sunday, but the following day (yesterday), the parents brought him back to the hospital, alleging that some parts of the body were removed.

It was gathered that the newborn was brought to the hospital on Sunday, but confirmed dead by a Paediatrician who attended to him.

“The parents brought the child to hospital on Sunday evening, immediately, a Paediatrician looked at the child and confirmed him dead.

The hospital ‘discharged’ him and the parents carried the child away, but surprisingly, this morning (yesterday), the parents brought the baby back, accusing the hospital of removing the baby’s eyes, noise, and ear. They came with the police and arrested some nurses in the hospital,” the source said.

Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident, saying the suspects have been arrested in connection with the crime.

“It is true but I have not got the details of the incident. Information we got is that the child was delivered in another hospital, but was referred to the hospital for proper medication where the child later died,” Edafe said. (The Guardian)
