Five members of the Rapid d’Intervention Battalion (BIR), a Cameroonian military unit were on Saturday reportedly killed by separatist fighters suspected to be loyalists of the Biafra Nations League (BnL), following an alleged invasion of their camp early in the morning.

Reports say that men of the BIR brought down two polls with Biafran flags on them about two kilometers away from the separatists’ camp before the invasion of the camp at 9 O’clock in the morning, in Isangele, Bakassi Peninsula, but were swiftly resisted by the Black Marine militant arm of BnL.

The separatist militants were said to have opened fire on the soldiers and killed five officers while it lost one man, whose name was given as Edem Asuquo.

Residents who heard gunshots have reportedly fled their communities for safety.

A boat driver working with BnL who pleaded anonymity told newsmen that he alerted the group when on his way returning from Akwa Ibom State he saw Cameroonian forces patrolling with three gunboats towards the direction of the camp,

“I don’t know if they succeeded in ransacking the camp, militant group first opened fire when the military were approaching them, bullets were reigning like water for 1hr, I diverted to another town,” he said.
