Algerian football great Madjer sentenced to 6-month jail term

Jailed Algerian football great Rabah Madjer

Former Algerian footballer Rabah Madjer was given a six-month prison sentence after being convicted of fraud in court in Algiers on Thursday.

The 63-year-old Madjer was also fined 600 euros (640 dollars).

This was after judges ruled he was still generating revenue for public advertising contracts when his two former sports newspapers were no longer on the market.

Algeria’s national publishing and advertising agency therefore sued for damages and Madjer, along with a co-defendant, must now also pay them total compensation of 3,200 euros.

Madjer, who went on to coach his country, enjoyed a rich playing career.

This included a brilliant backheel equaliser to help FC Porto defeat Bayern Munich 2-1 in the 1987 European Cup final.

He also scored the opening goal in Algeria’s 2-1 win over West Germany at the 1982 World Cup.

The court acquitted Madjer on other charges, including identity theft. (dpa/NAN)
