The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ebonyi State on Wednesday morning prevented journalists from covering a meeting at its state headquarters located along Town Planning Way in Abakaliki, the state capital.
Problem started around 11:15 a.m. when correspondents representing various media organisations in the state gathered at the Conference Hall of the INEC Office for a briefing.
The State INEC Administrative Secretary, Mr Clement Oha, summoned the journalists to his office and dismissed them.
According to him, “The Commission does not need the massive coverage of its activities; we don’t need this whole press.”
The meeting may not be unconnected with Tuesday’s directive by the Ebonyi State House of Assembly during its plenary, for INEC to conduct bye-election in constituencies whose lawmakers’ seats the lawmakers recently declared vacant.
