Commercial activities, as well schools and banks were all shut down on Wednesday following the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB sit at home order.

IPOB had declared a sit-at-home on the days its leader, Nnamdi Kanu would be appearing in court.

To this end, the entire city of Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi was a ghost town as residents stayed off the road for fear of attack by Biafra agitators.

While streets were deserted and left for lizards, chicken and goats, security personnel were also out of sight.

According to a source in Nnewi, the commercial city was a ghost town today as residents stayed indoors.

He said: “It was like the city was dead. You can imagine, Nnewi, the motorcycle city that is always full of hustle and bustle with motorcycle and people fighting for road space is completely deserted, no person, no motorcycle traders or even security officers are seen anywhere. The city is just calm.”

A resident of Onitsha, Mrs Blessing Chisom, said that movement in Onitsha as markets, shops remained closed.

She said that transporters were also out of sight as people stayed in their homes in obedience to IPOB’s sit-at-home order.

But in his reaction, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Tochukwu Ikenga denied security operatives were nowhere to be seen saying: “Security operatives were everywhere from Nnewi to Awka, Ekwulobia and Onitsha.

“I told you I just came from Onitsha now to work and our police personnel are everywhere.”
