The Zamfara Legislative Assembly has launched animpeachment process against the state’sdeputygovernor, Mahadi Aliyu.

This is contained in a statement issued in Gusau on Friday by the legislature’s Director General, Press Affairs and Public Relations, Mustafa Jafaru-Kaura.

According to the statement, the move followed the filing of an impeachment notice by the chamber’s deputy speaker, Nasiru Magarya.

“As part of the provision in Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic ofNigeriawhich empowers legislatures to initiate impeachment proceedings against a governor or his deputy for allegations of constitutional wrongdoing, wrongdoing or abuse of office.

“Therefore, today the Vice President and Chairman of the House Public Accounts Committee filed a formal request notifying the Speaker of the House of the decision to impeach Barr. Mahdi Aliyu Muhammad Gusau as deputy governor of the state,” said Jafaru-Kaura.

The vice president accused the deputy governor, Mahdi Aliyu-Gusau, of alleged constitutional violations, abuse of office and misappropriation of funds, which are impeachable offences, adding that section 188 of the 1999 Constitution empowered them to initiate legal impeachment proceedings against the lieutenant governor without further delay.

In response, the Speaker promised that the assembly would investigate the accusations against the lieutenant governor and act appropriately in accordance with the provisions of the constitution.
