An Onitsha High Court in Anambra State, presided over by Justice D. A. Onyefulu jas convicted two accused persons, Valentine Umezinwa and Emeka Okolonji who have been standing trial for conspiracy and murder.
However, the convicts would know their fate on February 9, this year when the actual punishment for the offense (death sentence, jail term, or freedom) as the case may be, would be handed to them by the court, according to new Anambra state law.
The convicts had been arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy and murdering of one Blessing Eze (a.k.a Golden), identified by the prosecution as a sex worker.
According to the prosecution, the accused persons had on a fateful day, lured, murdered, and dumped the deceased’s corpse at Dennis Memorial Grammar School, DMGS round-about axis in Onitsha.
Convicting the duo defendants, the Presiding judge emphasized that 9th February 2022 would be a decision date, as applicable in the new Anambra state law.
Counsel to the defendants, Chimezie Emma Okeke, told newsmen outside the courtroom that, “we may likely go to court to challenge the judgment”, even as the state counsel, Barr. (Mrs) Oguejiofor sent a representative counsel to hold a brief for her during the judgment. (Vanguard)
