A member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Olusile Joy Omotola, has reached out to widows in Ovom Community in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State as part of her contribution to improving the welfare of the aged widows in society.

Olusile alongside corpers who are of the medical profession undertook Sensitization/Health talk on diabetics and high blood pressure for their age group.

Apart from offering free consultation and check up for widows on blood sugar and blood pressure, they also donated wrappers and foodstuffs, including bags of rice and garri, to the widows.

On her motivation, Ms Omotola, who hails from Ogun State, described widows as members of the society who do not just suffer the death of their spouses but also suffer mental health illnesses like depression, anxiety, physical health illness high blood pressure and diabetics, stroke, among others.

Widowhood, according to her, is among the most stressful of all life events and requires more psychological and behavioral adjustment than any other life transition.

She said that after a critical study of the situation of widows in the community she saw the need to quickly reach out to them as they were endangered and this birthed the project “New Year For Widows”.

The goal of the project, according to Ms Omotola, is to empower the widows in the community with some of life’s basic amenities, create a health environment for them to support each other through this period of their lives, celebrate their strength and encourage them to keep pushing for the coming years ahead, teach them how to take care of their all-round wellbeing and also conduct high blood pressure and blood sugar test on them to give them personalized recommendation to keep themselves at their best always.

Responding on behalf of Ovom Community Development Committee (CDC) and the widows, Mr. Ibesemiye Silver thanked Ms Omotola for her kind gesture, praying God Almighty “to grant her blessings in all her future endeavours”.
