The Director and Acting Chairman, Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB), Dr Hassan Sule, has said teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have no reasons to embark on industrial action as the board has paid salaries, arrears of minimum wage and other allowances up to December 2021.

The Director, however, disclosed that teachers employed by the Local Education Authority (LEA) of the Area Councils had outstanding salaries and allowances due to some disagreements with their various council administrations.

The Ag. Chairman who bared his mind during a session in his office, argued that FCT UBEB was at the forefront of payment of minimum wage to teachers in the country.

“I have been a member of national body of Education Secretaries and we have a point of discussing the welfare of teachers. I can tell you that FCT UBEB is up-to-date in payments of minimum wage due to teachers in the country.

“We are meeting the Area Councils Chairmen of Gwagwalada, Kuje and Bwari where there are issues of replacement and recruitment of teachers between the councils and Education Secretaries. As we had resolved through continuous interface, as directed by the Minister of State, Dr Ramatu Tijanni Aliyu, for onward presentation to JAC for approval and subsequent payment to the affected teachers in the Area Councils of the FCT,” Sule said.

He reiterated the determination of FCT UBEB administration to continue to dialogue with teachers, while calling on the unions to exercise patience and restraint, to ensure the resolution of the pending issues.
