Burna Boy’s sister, Nissi Ogulu, seeks musical breakthrough

Artist and Singer Nissi Ogulu

Surprise! Surprise!! Unknown to most people,Burna Boy’s sister is into music and coming on strong on the industry?

Nissi Ogulu is younger sister to Grammy award winning artist, Burna Boy and just like her brother, she has had a musical career since she was six years old.

Nissi, who is better known as an artist, has lately been talking about her musical career, dismissing the notion that her parents are forcing her into music.

In an exclusive chat with a national daily early January 2022, the 27-year-old singer and artist said her parents are not behind her journey into showbiz. Nissi has released quite a number of hits such as ‘Judi, Pay Attention’ among others.

The Afro-Jazz singer and songwriter already has a seven-track EP in the market titled, “Ignite”.

She is Spaceship Records’ first signing, and has released several singles, among them “Trouble” and “Tornado”. Then there is “Judi“, which I mentioned earlier, and others like “Notice”, “Babalawo”, and “Holiday”, amongst others.

Her music is a signature fusion sound – a blend of Highlife, Afro-punk, and Afro-jazz along with her own twist.

Her music encompasses a “nice spectrum of sound” as she blends both African and European influences.

Speaking on her journey into music, Nissi once said: “When I was younger I played the piano at first, then would perform at parties with my friends. We would pretend we were Destiny's Child.” She revealed that as she grew up she connected with “emotionally expressive” singers like Alicia Keys, Nina Simone, and Etta James.

For now, Nissi is better known for the art business and she was in the news recently for hostingher family and friends to an art exhibition in Lagos tagged, ‘Puzzled’.

Recounting how she started out as a visual artist, she said: “I started with arts when I was a kid. I think my closest memory is as a six-year-old redrawing Spiderman comics. I have always done visual arts. In my second year in A-levels, I dropped it as a subject because I had an exhibition. But, I wasn’t painting for grades anymore. It has always been a part of me.”

Revealing how she combines being a singer and artist, she said, “It flows very freely. If you look at the majority of my works, they have music influences. When I make music, I see visuals in colours in my head.”

Will she one day hit it big in the music world like her big brother, Burna Boy? Only time will tell.
