Burna Boy
Proud winner of Grammy awards 2021 of Best Global Music Album for his song “Twice as Tall”, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, known professionally as Burna Boy, has revealed how he managed to break into the highly competitive American music industry.
In a recent exclusive interview on CNN African Voices, the 30 years old Port Harcourt, Rivers State-born singer, rapper and songwriter, said he practically walked the streets of the United States, pushing himself to the smallest as well as the biggest venues.
“It’s almost like when you plant something and you water it, you already know it’s gonna grow and you’ll get the fruits and stuff,” said the artiste who studied Media Technology at the University of Sussex.
The grandson of Benson Idoniji, a one-time manager of the Afrobeats legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, says there are no shortcuts to success.
Hear him in part:
“No shortcuts. I did pretty much every venue there is to do in America. I don’t think there’s any venue you go to and you wouldn’t see my name somewhere. Any venue that matters, you understand?
“From the smallest to the biggest. It’s almost like when you plant something and you water it, you already know it’s gonna grow and you'll get the fruits and stuff. For me, it’s just been that.
“I’m glad to see that everybody is now following and saying that that’s the right way to go and now doing the same thing.
“I love the process. For me, it’s like the more the process requires, the more stories I have to tell, you understand? It's all a blessing at the end of the day.”
