The grid may yet suffer another collapse due to attacks on the Trans-Forcardos Pipeline (TFP), findings have shown.

The attack which occurred on December 17, 2021, had impacted SEPLAT’s Production.

Already, five operational Nigerian Independent Power Plants (NIPPs), Omotosho, Geregu, Olorunsogo, Sapele, Ihovbor have been affected.

This was contained in a letter signed by the Managing Director (MD), Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) Mr Chiedu Ugbo and addressed to the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc.

In the letter; RE: NOTICE OF GAS SHORTAGE FROM NIGERIA GAS COMPANY, sighted by the Nigerian Tribune Abuja, the NDPHC disclosed that while Omotosho NIPP has been forced to shut down, Geregu and Ihovbor are only receiving limited gas volumes thus leading to part load or low generation operation.

It said the Nigeria Gas Company (NGC), had via an email (Annexure I) notified it of a breach on their gas supply network as well as technical issues affecting gas suppliers on the western axis.

“These challenges have led NGC to issue the notice of gas Curtailment arising from the Abysmal System Pressure Levels that must be managed to avoid collapse of the gas grid,” the letter read.

The Company had warned that the breach may also affect other Producers if not immediately repaired as the NPDC’s Ughelli East Plant is currently down while Chevron Nigeria Ltd (CNL) had also lost a Compressor because of technical issues.

“The combined impact of all these issues is a deferment, unavailability to off-takers, of about 250MMscfd of gas from the Pipeline Network,” it read.

The Company in the letter, however, assured that it is monitoring the situation and committed to ensuring the plants return to full operations as soon as gas supply improves.

It copied the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) as well as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
