The Nigerian Institute of Surveyors (NIS) Abuja, has asked the federal government to put in place, enabling law that will empowers surveyors to monitor building, bridges and other structures from conception to finishing, saying that was the only way to stop building collapse in Nigeria.
President of NIS, Dr. Kayode Oluwamotemi, said countries world over deploy Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) approach to measuring very small change in vertical or horizontal positions of structures to the nearest millimeters, adding that the GNSS receivers which surveyors are trained to manipulate are capable of measuring deformation.
He said most structures in the country collapse due to the fact that persons without requisite training often take the task of Surveyors upon themselves, adding this account for the absence of names Survey firms on the signposts at construction sites.
