Why Southern Governors should come up with combined security outfit, By Mike-Nifty A A

Security is one lingering issue one has written extensively and intensively about in Nigeria; and most social commentators and public affairs analysts also tend to utilise on-air platforms like the television or radio to advance same concern.

At certain times, there will be a presage of a likely event or certain security calamity about to befall certain communities in different parts of the country through intelligence reports by security agencies; and still nothing meaningful is done to avert such disastrous incidents. These include like incessant kidnappings, terrorism, ritual killings, armed robbery and banditry, all of which have happening on a daily basis in mother land Nigeria.

The coterie of southern governors should come together for a common goal in the southern region, specifically on security matters. Lately, they've been having series of meetings. First, they had a meeting on different issues in Delta State, Lagos State and Enugu State where issues such as Petroleum Industry Act, VAT, security, among others, were discussed. And I presume the purpose of the meetings came to fruition.

When Amotekun, a South-west Regional Security outfit was created and passed into law by various South-west state governors, everything needed to make it work and come out successful was doled out. From the uniform, which looked frumpy, and some other modes of operation, I think more training needs to be done before inducting new operatives into the system.

The only successful thing one has seen in the Amotekun is that majority of the operatives have conquered thanatophobia. From my perception of reward of efforts put in after carrying out a successful task, the operatives have been financially encouraged as they collect their salaries as at when due. Given that nothing is impossible in Nigeria, a protest can just erupt suddenly by the operatives that they are being owed salaries and other benefits. But as at today, nothing of such has happened so that's commendable: a smooth job by governors of the respective states that floated the outfit.

Ebube-Agu, on the other end in the South-east, took off in a few states and it is like it never took off as no progress has been recorded, and the South-east is a den of extra judicial killings, among other crimes perpetrated in that part of the region. But Ebube-Agu has done little or nothing to combat the growing insecurity. The menagerie of governors still haven't decided if they should take off with Ebube Agu in their individual states or not; but it all seems most are still indecisive.

The South-South region is still contemplating whether to create their own outfit or not; that is a talk of another time.

Collectively, governors in the 17 states of the southern region should unite and connect more closely than they've done in the past, with a view to coming up with a sole security outfit to majorly combat crimes. As a solution, that is the best they can do for the unification of the South. Among its merits, genuine unemployment would attract more stakeholders of local and foreign investors to support the programme. This is another step towards contributing to the Gross Domestic Product, which automatically boosts the Nigerian economy.

Also insecurity, which is the major issue in the country that has waded off possible foreign investors to other countries, can re-attract them to come back and invest in the country most, especially in the southern states where there is no longer hubbub. There are many benefits to creating a sole security outfit in the South that will unify the region more with love, and they will see themselves as one the more.
