A mining site
Miners in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State have suspended activities at the lead mining site in Anyiin after three people were killed.
The deceased had lost their lives two days ago when the mine collapsed on them while they were working.
Chairman of the miners’ association in the area, John Ikyanyon, said on Thursday that mining activities at the site were suspended in order to enhance safety measures at the sites.
Ikyanyon explained that the decision became imperative to ensure that safety procedures that have hitherto been put in place were enforced and complied with by the miners to avoid a repeat of the incident.
He further narrated that the situation which led to the death of the deceased occurred as a result of excessive rainfall, which caused one of the pits to collapse.
The association’s chairman added that accidents were inevitable at any mining sites, but due to the safety measures put in place at the sites in Anyiin, minimal accidents had been recorded over time.
Ikyanyon maintained that the association had been working with relevant agencies of government on the environmental impact assessment, stressing that precautionary measures including visitations by relevant government agencies to the site were frequent to evaluate safety standards.
