No fewer than 50 drivers were on Wednesday manhandled up by suspected touts numbering over 30 who demanded payment of multiple levies from them in Onitsha, Anambra State.

It was gathered that the drivers, mostly commercial tricycle and motorcycle operators were atracked by touts numbering over 30.

The attack led to the damage of the many tricycles.

Reacting to the incident,the Chairman of United Commercial KEKE NAPEP and Motorcycle Riders Association (UCKEMORAN) Anambra State Chapter, Chief Arinze Igbanuka said that the touts commit such crime daily and still go free.

He said, "We say no to that.There is no day that passes without, 10 to 50 drivers being attacked by the touts who collect multiple levies from the drivers and as a result, we are going to partner with the state government to stop these touts from their illegal operations”

"Because of the serious injuries the drivers sustained, our plan to kick-off war against these touts who armed themselves with guns, machetes, club, and other dangerous weapon of war, billed to hold tomorrow, August 27, 2021 in Awka has been postponed to September 3, in Onitsha. This is to enable us to treat the injured drivers”

Igbanuka said the union is working to stop all manner of illegal levies being collected from Keke operators and ensuring payment of government approved revenues, fight criminalities by building a perfect synergy with police and other security agencies, as well as introduce a good welfare package to take care of all keke operators in the state.

According to him, the union’s main objective is to sanitize Keke transportation in the commercial city.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO DSP Tochi Ikenga could not be reached for reaction as his mobile line was not reachable.
