Organisers of the annual Pink Awards have cancelled this year’s edition of the event.

This is due to the death of Comrade Yinka Odumakin, the husband of the promoter of the Awards, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin.

This was contained in a statement issued by the organisers on Monday and made available to News Express.

“It’s been two years since the last time we graced the prestigious Pink Awards presented by La Veronica Magazine for some reasons beyond the control of the CEO and her team,” the statement said.

Lamenting the earth loss of “a rare super human in the person of Comrade Yinka Odumakin”, the organiders said:

“We are still finding it hard to believe it has happened even months after his sudden demise.

“And so in the light of this, after critical thinking and a systematic decision making process, we have decided to cancel the 2021 edition of our prestigious and highly-adorned Pink Awards. Plans for the event to hold in 2022 have already been set into motion”, the organisers stated.

According to them, after the highly anticipated and the massively attended 2019 PINK Awards that got the global entertainment media agog with awardees showcasing their beautiful award plaques and the media talking about the razzmatazz and happenings at the annual event, the world was brought to a total halt with a pandemic that came in form of a virus called COVID-19 in 2020.

The statement further said the pandemic crippled many economies in the world and fueled several unrests all over the globe; one of which was Nigeria’s most important protest in recent history, the #EndSARS movement.

“These things and more made it impossible for PINK Awards to happen that year”.

“We eventually entered the 2021 with the hope that things would gradually be back to normal, but instead, we got the saddest news and shock of our lives with the sudden death of a dogged icon of human rights, Late Comrade Yinka Odumakin, who till death was a resounding voice of the voiceless, a big heartache and thorn in the flesh of our political vampires, a fearless and ruthless spokesperson of the Afenifere, a loving husband to our most loving, dogged woman of courage and PINK Awards promoter, Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin.

“We use this medium to say thank you, our loving fans and supporters who have stuck with us from the start of our journey. We cannot love you any less than we do already,” said the statement.
