Residents of Federal Capital Territory FTC, Abuja, Nasarawa, Niger and Kogi states, currently facing epileptic power supply are in for worse times as imminent blackout hits these areas following a sharp drop in supply, from 400MW to marginal 20MW, indicating collapse of the nation’s electricity grid.

Already, residents of these areas have been experiencing poor electricity supply for some time now as a result of failure of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to generate power, causing outage in its wake.

The development has also led to rationing of power arrangement for the residents, especially in the FCT, who now live without power supply most of the periods of the day.

However, while explaining development, the General Manager, Corporate Communications of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), Mr Oyebode Fadipe, confirmed the drop in allocation of MW.

He said in a press statement on Wednesday, “At the moment, only 20MW has been allocated to AEDC as against the over 400MW that we have been receiving in recent times.”

Appealing for consumers’ patience and promising that power would be restored in the affected areas as soon as there was improvement in load allocation, he blamed the development on grid system outage saying: “Following a grid system outage that occurred at about 12:26pm today, we have been unable to serve our customers in Niger, Kogi and Nasarawa states as well as a significant portion of the entire Federal Capital Territory.”
