Residents of Anguwan Rimi, in Kaduna North Local Government Area, were on Monday thrown into confusion when a dreaded gang known as Sara Suka invaded the area, brandishing dangerous weapons, killing a 22-year-old man.
The victim, identified as Shamsudeen Abdullhamid, was caught up in the raid by about 20 members of the gang who stormed the area in three tricycles popularly called ‘Keke Napep’ and started attacking young men on sight.
Sources said that Shamsudeen, a carpenter by profession, was on his way to his workshop when he innocently walked into the gang along Jama’a road in Anguwan Rimi.
An eyewitness, Usman Aliyu, said: “The gang members started cutting the late Shamsudeen with their machete and even used a stone to smash his head, while shouting in Hausa, ‘who so ever can save him to come out, we are on ground waiting for such person’. Seeing the kind of weapons brandished by the gang, residents had no option but to run for their dear lives.”
Speaking to newsmen at the Shehu Laminu Road residence of the deceased, his mother, Hajiya Husaina Abubakar, said her son bid her farewell around 8:10 a.m. and about 40 minutes later she received a call that he was lying dead at Barau Dikko Specialist Hospital.
The distraught mother decried the murder of Shamsudeen, whom she described as a peace-loving man whom she could not remember having any problem with anybody.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Zubairu Abdullahi, confirmed the incident. He said that the police was on top of the situation and that a crack team had been deployed to the area to restore order.
The Chief Imam of the Shehu Laminu Road Mosque, Sheikh Gambo Zaria, who led the Firdaus prayer of late Shamsudeen, prayed for the repose of the soul of the deceased. He called on Kaduna State Government and security operatives to act fast and bring to an end the activities of the Sara Suka gang in the state.
