President Buhari
Civil rights advocacy group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has blamed President Muhammadu Buhari as the root cause of what it called “the current social menace and systematic collapse of security.”
This social menace, the rights group said, includes the emerging unexplained attacks of security agents by unknown people which it attributed to the deep seated disrespect of the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution of 1999 by President Buhari even after he swore an oath to abide by the affirmations and provisions of the grund norm.
The civil society organisation expressed sadness that majority of the commentators and political leaders who have the influence to redirect the steps of the President who has serially deviated from the principles and letters of the laws and the constitution of Nigeria, are not doing that due to their selfish pursuit of presidential favours, contracts, appointments for their cronies, the need to sound politically correct and their blind loyalty to the President, lamenting that this is detrimental to the collective of Nigeria.
HURIWA noted that so long as those who ought to speak honestly are not willing to do so due to fear of possible loss of unmerited favours and privileges, the presidential missteps and errors of Buhari will continue.
The rights group expressed anxiety that the negative consequences of these monumental missteps of the President Muhammadu Buhari's misrule will take the nation over six decades to correct.
In a media statement on Sunday by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, and the National Media Affairs Director, Ms Zainab Yusuf, HURIWA further carpeted the National Assembly leadership headed by the Senate President Mr. Ahmed Lawan and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, both of whom alongside many other members of the ruling cabal in the parliament are much more vigorously pursuing partisan agenda of the All Progressives Congress (APC) that are at variance with the global best practices.
The rights group observed that due to lack of proper guidance and solid altruistic body of advice given to and accepted by the President Buhari, the government is bereft of those global governance standards which if implemented by the executive arm of government and particularly the President, then Nigeria's democracy will blossom and become viable.
“The Senate President most times speaks and behaves more like a junior aide of President Buhari than the leader of the National Assembly who should ensure that his members and mates in the National Assembly deliver the most qualitative supervisory and effective oversight functions to compel adherence to the Constitution and the rule of law by the executive arm of government and particularly by the President and the cabinet and agencies of the national government.
“The recent argument by the Senate President that those who says Nigeria is failing are unpatriotic shows that the Chairman of the National legislature lacks what it takes to lead to the emergence of an independent National Assembly that will carry out all her works with the wellbeing and welfare of the citizens,” HURIWA said.
