Anambra State Governor Chief Willie Obiano yesterday inaugurated the 6th State Assembly with Hon. (Mrs.) Rita Maduagwu emerging as the new Speaker and Hon. Haford Oseke as Deputy Speaker. Rita succeeds another female Speaker, Hon. Chinwe Nwebili, who did not seek re-election as a state lawmaker and has since been appointed Commissioner for Environment by the governor.
Speaking at the occasion, Obiano called on the Legislators to see themselves as representatives of their constituencies rather than the platform that brought them to serve.
He reminded them that though the electioneering campaign is over, that what lies before the state at the moment is development.
“This is the most auspicious time when everybody will join hands to make the state more progressive. Rise to your full height and fulfill the expectations of the people. Think of what you can do to keep the ideals of the state," he said.
Obiano used the occasion to announce the appointment of a former member of the House as the State Liaison Officer to the House.
He also called on the electorate to serve as the watchdog of the Legislature and the Executive to ensure that they fulfill their obligations.
News Express recalls that earlier before the inauguration ceremony, 30 members of the House elected their principal officers, with Hon. Rita Maduagwu, who was nominated as Speaker by Hon. Ikem Uzoezie, proving to be the popular choice.
The other elected new officer is former Majority leader of the House, Hon Harford Oseke (Awka South 11) who emerged Deputy Speaker with unanimous vote after being nominated by Hon Victor Jideofor Okoye.
In her acceptance speech, Hon. Maduagwu urged Ndi Anambra to put hands on deck to ensure that the people get the change they have long yearned for.
