Prominent Nigerian politicians have continued to congratulate Senator Bukola Saraki on his election, Tuesday, as Senate President and Hon. Aminu Dogara as Speaker of the House of Reps.

Reacting on the development, the immediate Past Speaker, House of Representative, Aminu Tambuwal, described the whole scenario as a democracy taking its firm root in the country.

“This has shown that democracy has come of age and the doctrine of the independence of the legislature was gradually taking firm root in Nigeria. Those who were unsuccessful in the contest should regard their actions as positive contributions to democratic process and accept defeat in good faith,” he said.

Also lending his voice, Oyo State gubernatorial aspirant, Engineer Femi Babalola, a.k.a Jogor, described the event as democracy in action.

“This is a perfect workout of democracy in Nigeria, which is in the full national interest. It was this same party, APC, that opened legislators eyes to their independence in year 2011. Definitely, what goes around comes around,” Babalola admitted.

Also, Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayo Fayose, said: “It was a lesson of life, and this indicates that our country has come of age democratically. This has also demonstrated the statement President Buhari made in his inaugural speech that 'He is indeed for everybody but for nobody.’

Former Deputy Chairman, PDP, Bode George, indicated that what transpired was a clear case of national politics.

“To me, this has proved that national politics is better than zonal politics. Since 1999, the PDP has been known for playing national politics and we will continue to do just that, whether we agree in the opposition or not. What happened is a welcome development for national and rational politics,” he stated.

Governorship candidate of the Lagos PDP, Jimi Agbaje also submitted that the event was a triumph for democracy, saying leaders should play politics of national interest and work towards welfare of the people.

“The emergence of the two legislators is a triumph for democracy. This is further telling lawmakers not be divided along party lines when it comes to matters concerning the country's interest and the people’s welfare. I pray that the eighth assembly would displayed as much selflessness and maturity in working for the benefit of Nigerians,” Agbaje said.
