The overwhelming election of the new Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Mr. Aniekan Uko, on Monday, has been described as “the handiwork and acts of God.”

The immediate past Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Sam Ikon, made the declaration while speaking to journalists soon after the “surprise election of Mr. Uko.”

Elder Ikon, who is now representing Etinan Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, advised the new Speaker to “carry all the members along” in his administration of the House and wished him and his colleagues “successful legislative deliberations.”

News Express recalls that the new speaker, described as “a fresh new timer” in the state Assembly, was elected unopposed by the 6th Assembly members on Monday evening.

Like all other members of the House, except one, Mr. Aniekan Uko, was also elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and he represents Ibesikpo Asutan State Constituency of the state.

His Deputy, also of the PDP, is the representative of Oron/Udung Uko State Constituency in the House. Meanwhile, the House has adjourned, to reconvene on Thursday, June 18, 2015.
