A brace from Taiwo Awoniyi this morning against Hungary has earned the Flying Eagles a place in the Under-20 World Cup in New Zealand.
The Eagles, who had a bad start in the championship with a 2-4 loss to Brazil before brightening their chances with a 4-0 drubbing of North Korea, knew that only a win would be enough to see them qualify as Hungary held a better goal advantage going into the game.
Awoniyi opened scoring in the 33th minute with a header from the impressive Saviour Godwin’s cross.
Though Hungary had moments to score, they were thwarted by some brave saves from the Eagles goalie Joshua Enaholo.
Awoniyi was on hand once more to put the game beyond the eastern Europeans reach with a screamer of a short in the 54th minute of play.
With this win, Nigeria finished second in Group E behind Brazil, and will play against Germany in the second round of the competition.
Coach Manu Garba showed he wasn’t scared of big decisions as he opted once again to leave out from his starting line-up the two biggest names of his squad, Manchester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho and Isaac Success of Udinese.
