Oyo workers call off strike

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Oyo State chapter,on Fridaysuspended its 11-day-old strike and directed the workers to resume workon Monday.

Chairman of the local chapter, Mr Waheed Olojede gave the directive at the end of a meeting with the Head of Service, Mr Soji Eniade, in Ibadan.

Workers in the state have been on strike since May 25 mainly over non-payment of salaries since March.

"After a successful negotiation, which led to the signing of Memorandum of Understanding with the state government, the labour unions have resolved to suspend the strike," he said.

He said part of the agreement was on how to pay the outstanding March, April and May salaries.

According to him, the unions agreed that workers on grade levels 1 to 12 would be paid in June while levels 13 and above would be paid later.

The union leader said that this was better than accepting 50 per cent salary for all categories of workers in the state.
