
Nigeria’s wrestlers to the just concluded African Championships in Cairo, Egypt, hauled in a total of 8 medals in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman styles.
In the Freestyle, The female duo of Blessing Oborodudu (63kg) and Odunayo Adekuoroye (53kg), a 2014 Commonwealth Games Gold medallist, won Gold medals, with Blessing winning her fifth straight African title. Silver medals were won by Aminat Adeniyi (58kg) and Amas Daniel (86kg), whilst Saso Tamara (86kg) and Ebikewenimi Welson (57kg) won bronze medals
In the Greco-Roman style, Emmanuel Nwori (75kg) and Ituru Oke (66kg) won bronze medals in their class.
An elated Nigeria Wrestling Federation President, Hon. (Dr.) Daniel Igali, who announced these results, affirmed that Nigerian wrestlers have been showing improvement in their training and confidence, and Nigerians should expect results like this at the All Africa Games in September and the World Championships also in the same month.
Hon Igali was confident that Nigeria would be able to present up to 10 Wrestlers for the Olympic Games in Rio next year, from the expected performance of these wrestlers at the World Championships which would serve as the Olympic qualifiers.
