Inspector General of Police, IGP Solomon Arase, has directed the Deputy Inspector General of Police in Charge of Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department to investigate the alleged fraudulent manipulation of election results in Akwa Ibom and Rivers states governorship elections of April 11, 2015 by the resident electoral commissioners of the two states.
The order followed a petition by the Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CSNAC) demanding urgent investigation of the alleged fraud.
The Principal Staff Officer to the IGP, Commissioner of Police Austin I. Iwar, in a cover letter with reference number CB:7000/IGP.SEC/ABJ/VOL.227/306 and dated 19th May, 2015 forwarded CSNAC’s petition to the DIG, under the IGP’s instruction, with a demand for investigation and report back to the IGP.
Commenting on the development, the Chairman of CSNAC, Olanrewaju Suraju, described it as being “indicative of progressive and pragmatic change in the management of the Nigeria Police Force.” Suraju commended “the responsiveness, promptitude, proactive and professional approach of the new IGP to his duty and leadership of the police.”
