The Rivers State government has dissolved the board of directors of Greater Port Harcourt Authority with immediate effect.
This was contained in a short statement issued in Port Harcourt, on Sunday evening by the chairman, media and publicity committee of the Governor Nyesom Wike Inauguration Committee.
The former administrator of the Greater Port Harcourt Authority, Mr Chim Akarolo, had been accordingly directed to hand over the administration and all property in his possession to the secretary of the authority with immediate effect.
Similarly, the new administration in the state had directed the refuse disposal contractors, otherwise known as the Service Providers, to resume work immediately.
The state government said the directive was to ensure that Port Harcourt, the state capital. returned to its former ‘Garden City’ status, which it alleged had been neglected by the immediate past administration in the state.
Residents and people of the state had been groaning under the uncleared mountains of refuse and garbage on major roads in the state capital.
The situation had been attributed to the failure of the state government to pay the four-month salaries of the refuse contractors.
