Scene of the accident
A train, earlier today, Monday, February 15, 2021, had a head-on collision with a truck in Lagos.
The incident occurred at about 8.52 am at Mofolasayo Drive, Jonathan Coker Road Level Crossing, Iju/Ishaga, Lagos.
Eye Witnesses told newsmen that the driver of the loaded trailer, conveying pig feeds, ignored the horns of the approaching train which served as a signal for vehicles to stop crossing the rail track.
After the collision, the trailer fell outside the trail line, where motorists and motorcyclists were waiting for the train.
The driver of the trailer has been arrested by officials of the civil defence corps.
There was no casualty from the incident. However, a tricycle was crushed by the truck.
Speaking with journalists, Kayode Stephen, the tricycle operator, explained that he ran for his life and left his tricycle behind because he could not drive it away from the collision.
“I wanted to relax and my spirit was saying, I should not work, because I want to pay the owner of the tricycle, tomorrow morning. I’m paying him N15,000, every week,” he said.
“So my mind was telling me, I should not work. I was like I have to pay this money. This Keke (referring to the tricycle) and I don’t want to owe the person,” Kayode Stephen said.
Confirming the incident, the General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu said following the incident, investigations revealed that reckless driving led to the truck crashing into the train on motion.
He said, ”An articulated truck laden with quantities of food stuff has collided with a moving train on the rails. Investigation conducted revealed that reckless driving led to the truck crashing into the moving train. The impact resulted in the accident while a tricycle was completely crushed as the tricycle driver escaped by sheer luck. The train had been pulled off the road while the ease of traffic is being restored,”
Corroborating LASEMA’s view, the Acting Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency NEMA, Lagos State, Ibrahim Farinloye said the incident did not record any loss of life or injuries.
Security personnel were promptly deployed to the area to control vehicular movement.
The train has been evacuated while the truck was still lying on the rail track as at the time of this report, leaving a lane for vehicular movement.
