The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State have joined in mourning the death of veteran journalist and former Minister of Information, Prince Tony Momoh, which occurred in Abuja on Monday, aged 81.

A statement on Tuesday by NUJ National Secretary, Shuaibu Usman Leman Walin Shadalafiya, said that the union cherished his mentorship, guidance and support.

The statement described late Momoh as an authentic Prince and scion of the Ancient Auchi Kingdom, adding: “The Yerima of Auchi’s death at this difficult moment for the Media industry when his wise counsels are needed most is very painful.

“This sad event has yet again deprived Nigeria of one of its illustrious Journalists and Elder statesmen and we pray to God to grant the deceased eternal rest.

“He was a rare gem, an impeccable character and role model who stood and fought for the profession of journalism and fatherland.

“Our consolation was that he fought a good fight, was a well disciplined and thorough professional. Prince Tony Momoh lived for journalism and journalists.”

NUJ prayed to God Almighty to grant his immediate family and the media family the fortitude to bear this great loss.

Governor Uzodimma, for his part, bemoaned the sudden death of All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, saying that his contribution to the development of Nigeria is invaluable.

Uzodimma regretted that Prince Momoh died when his statesmanly services are still required in the country, noting that Nigeria’s development story will not be complete without Prince Momoh’s contributions.

The Imo State governor said that Prince Momoh impacted the society as a teacher, a journalist, a lawyer, a politician, among other numerous ways he deployed his talent in service to community, state and nation.

Besides, Uzodimma said Prince Momoh remained vocal and truthful in courses he was convinced in, and believed so much in a united Nigeria where equity, justice, fairness should be the guiding principle.

He said the APC has lost a dependable statesman, ally and consummate party man but that his legacies are there for all to see and learn from.

While commiserating the widow, immediate and larger family members of late Prince Momoh as well as the good people of Edo State on the sad loss, Governor Uzodimma urged them to find solace in the fact that the deceased led a good a life and touched many lives for which we are all witnesses.

He prayed God to grant Prince Momoh’s soul peaceful repose and comfort those he has left to mourn his demise.
