Anambra Civil Society Network (ACSONET), a platform for citizens and non-state actors, has condemned the current crisis between Aguleri and Umueri communities both in Anambra East Local Government Area of the state.

The fragile peace between the two neighbouring communities collapsed on Saturday resulting into a fiasco over lingering land issues.

News Express reports that the communities went into all-out war between 1999 and 2001, leaving behind massive destruction of property worth millions of naira, with residents running to nearby communities for refuge.

A release signed by its Chairman, Prince Chris Azor, the group implored indigenes of the two communities to eschew all forms of violence and pursue peace option towards settling their grievances and differences.

It reminded both communities of their age-long ties of affinity and brotherhood while calling on traditional rulers and leaders of both communities, as well as the entire Omambala stakeholders to convoke peace building and conflict resolution dialogue meetings that would engender sustainable peaceful coexistence in the affected communities.

The statement added: “The network enjoins all stakeholders to key into the State government’s intervention efforts, through the Governor, Chief (Sir) Willie Obiano, and ensure cessation of hostilities.

“Escalation of the crisis may adversely affect lives and livelihoods of our people, more so during this COVID-19 pandemic and its debilitating social and economic challenges.”

According to the statement, members of the Network are already assisting in peace building, resilience and rehabilitation efforts in the affected communities.

While appreciating the state Governor for his rapid response in ensuring calm in the affected communities, the network hailed the State Police Command under the leadership of Commissioner of Police (CP) John Abang for the timely intervention and swift response towards restoring normalcy in the area.
