What was perhaps the biggest obstacle on President Goodluck Jonathan’s path to the 2015 presidential ballot was removed when a Nigerian High Court sitting in the capital city of Abuja today cleared him to contest.
The judgement was delivered by Hon. Justice Oniyangi of Court 4 High Court of the FCT in suit FCT/HC/CV/2749/2012 between Cyracus Njoku Vs Jonathan, PDP & INEC.
Njoku, a member of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had prayed for the court to declare that Jonathan cannot run having previously completed the term of his erstwhile principal Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, who died in office as president on May 5, 2010.
Njoku’s hopes were however dashed by Justice Oniyangi, who held that Jonathan is in his first term which commenced on May 29, 2011 and he is thus free to seek a second term in office at the 2015 general election under the platform of the PDP or any other political party of his choice.
News Express reports that Jonathan is most likely to contest although he has yet to publicly admit it.
