A middle-aged man on Thursday lost his life while jumping out of a moving vehicle to in a failed bid to escape death along Awka – Onitsha Expressway.
The auto crash which involved a Suzuki shuttle bus with registration No NKE 46XA and a Mercedes Benz Truck with Reg No JJT 613XA left others with varying degrees of injury.
According to an eye witness, a total of four persons were inside the bus when its tyre burst while on high speed. One of the male passengers jumped off the bus and was crushed by an on-coming truck.
A media spokesperson of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the state, Florence Edor, in a statement said the injured were taken to an undisclosed hospital by a good Samaritan before the arrival of the FRSC rescue team, while the dead was deposited at Boromeo Hospital by the FRSC rescue team.
The statement added: “Obstruction was cleared to ensure a free flow of traffic along the route.
“The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Andrew A Kumapayi, sends his condolences to the deceased family and wishes the injured and accelerated recovery. He admonishes motorists to endeavor to use brand new tyres on their vehicles and desist from using fairly used (tokunbo) tyres which burst easily if exposed to heat.”
