Seasoned lawyer and politician, Senator Emma Nwaka, has condemned President Muhammadu Buhari’s refusal to honour the recent invitation by the House of Representatives to address it on the country’s worsening security situation, saying that it “leaves much to be desired.”

“Something as simple as our request for our President to address us on the burning issue of the day has been buried under the tome of obfuscating constitutional citations, leaving you to wonder whether he was invited to be killed. We found ourselves in a similar embarrassing situation during the #ENDSARS protests when all and sundry begged Mr. President to speak to his people. My gut feelings tell me that had he spoken early enough in a placatory tone, tempers would have cooled down thereby making it impossible for meddlesome interlopers to seize the high ground leaving in their wake blood, tears and wanton destruction,” Nwaka said Friday in a statement issued in Abuja.

The former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman in Abia State noted that “a leader ought always to demonstrate that he is in charge and the least ways is by engaging frontally with the people who placed their trust in him, the governed.”

According to him, “There are times when a leader could speak through his appointees, no doubt, but when it becomes the order of the day, it becomes difficult to know when the leader has spoken and when those around him, people we didn’t vote for, feed us with their own thoughts on issues. We have gotten used to President Buhari not visiting the people he govern to feel their pulse, as is the practice the world over, the least he could do is to talk to us very often from his cocoon or in the House of we the people,particularly in a terrible time like this.”
