Nigerian experts have always proved their mettle, even in advanced countries. Here in Nigeria, one of them, a medical doctor, Dr. Chidi Esike of the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State has been making waves for discovering a new technique to save women from uncontrollable life-threatening bleeding after putting to bed.

In Nigeria and elsewhere, there have been uncountable cases of women who died from excessive and uncontrollable bleeding, a major cause of post-natal deaths.

Before Esike’s discovery, the final treatment to keep such women alive was to remove their wombs, thereby denying them the right and possibility of having more pregnancies and children.

However, the new technique developed by Esike, called Esike’s Technique, effectively stops the bleeding as well as preserving the women’s wombs.

The new Esike’s Technique, has been published in the most recent edition of the highly respected ‘Obstetrics And Gynecology’, the official journal of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Volume 136 Number 3 of August 2020.

Esike, a native of Isuikwuato in Abia State and a consultant Obstetrician Gynecologist with the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, also lectures at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Clinical Medicine, College of Health Sciences of Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki.

According to Esike, he devised the technique in 2009 at the Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, Ebonyi.

He disclosed that between 2009 and 2018, he used the technique to treat uncontrollable life-threatening bleeding in 18 women.

He revealed that the women started bleeding uncontrollably after delivering their babies. According to him, the bleeding was successfully stopped with the technique in 16 of the women with the preservation of their wombs.

“This gives the technique 89 percent success rate in stopping uncontrollable bleeding in women after delivery and preserving their wombs,” he said.

Esike stated that at the point the technique was used in these women, the only option of treatment left to control their bleeding was the removal of their wombs. This is called hysterectomy in medicine.

He explained: “What this meant was that if the technique was not used on these women, all the 16 women that had this technique would have lost their wombs, even if the bleeding was successfully stopped.(Daily Independent)
