Ebonyi State Governor, Engr. David Umahi, has insisted that Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ebonyi State University chapter, remains proscribed despite agitations.

Speaking Sunday during a state broadcast at the old Government House, Abakaliki, Umahi said he would be in the university on Tuesday to determine the level of staff compliance with his directive for both academic and non-academic activities to resume in the institution on Wednesday, October 22, 2020.

The Governor maintained that with the subvention he gives to the University, the Management should be able to make up through students school fees and other internal sources and pay salaries to the varsity workers.

“Whether I proscribed ASUU or not, yes I did and that is government position.

“Whether such thing existed before, yes it does. Kogi State Government proscribed ASUU and they went to the court, even up to Supreme Court and he won.

“I will rely on that judgment to ensure that academic activities resume in EBSU,” he insisted.

According to Umahi, protesting youths in the South-East have been engaged to stop pretest as government at all levels are currently looking into the agitations of the youths to offer lasting solutions to them.

He condemned a situation where the nationwide protest has now been muted to be the orchestration of the Igbos.

Umahi, who is Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, called on all and sundry to go about their businesses across Ebonyi State and other South-East states without fear of any sorts

“I assure parents to be free to send their children and wards to school as the curfew in Ebonyi State remains effective from 8pm to 8am daily until further notice,” he said.
